I have worked in a variety of job roles:

HGV Driving

Qualified up to class 1 – passed Oct ‘13, class 2 passed Feb ‘09, driving experience includes HIAB lorry and drag for builders merchant, general haulage and timber grab lorry, towing chippers and trailers  for tree surgery contractors, transporting plant machinery.

Tree Surgery

Tree pruning and dismantling. Acting as crew leader on a variety of jobs – taking on site responsibility for health and safety of staff and public, drawing up site specific risk assessments, briefing personnel onoutcome of risk assessment and ensuring control measures and method statements were adhered to.

This work included various high-speed highways jobs and large site clearances. Experienced but not ticketed with skid steers, telehandlers, MEWP, tracked machinery, stump grinders, 360 excavator and  mulcher, remote controlled tracked flail mower.

Practical skills instruction/ training

I taught practical forestry and arboriculture skills in a land based college for three years. This involved planning, preparing, organising and delivering practical training sessions to students of all ages, abilities and backgrounds, on courses of varying durations – from ½ day to 2 year programmes. I worked on schemes of work, lesson plans, risk assessments, equipment maintenance, preparation and repair; motivating, managing and teaching students in various skills requiring differentiation of teaching methods and lesson outcomes to cater for varying abilities and requirements.

I also have reasonable computer skills and am familiar with the importance of completing paperwork as required, and maintaining records.

Forestry

Felling, coppicing, pruning, planting, timber extraction – including tractor and forwarder trailer, skidder winches, 4x4 driving, plus some horse logging. Also various green woodworking skills used to add value to timber including cleaving, turning, shaving, steaming, jointing, as well as charcoal production, milling timber and producing various woodland products out of harvested materials.

Small Scale Farming

Including most areas of sheep work plus mixed animal husbandry; tractor driving and machine operation, poly tunnel use and fruit and vegetable production.

Estate Maintenance

Tree, hedge and grass maintenance – including ride on and pedestrian machines, flails, rotaries and cylinder mowers, plus strimmers and brush cutters, fencing including gates, carpentry and timber frame building. I have worked on a number of roundwood timber framed building jobs, including barns, a house, bridge and outbuildings. This has given me a good knowledge of joints used in timber framing, plus experience of moving very large, heavy and awkward timbers in a safe and controlled way.

I am self-motivated and very hard working, and learn new skills and new approaches to jobs quickly. I am always keen to acquire new skills and knowledge, and I always view new ways of doing jobs as being beneficial to understand – personal professional development is an important
consideration to me. I am happy working either as part of a team or under my own initiative. I take pride in the work that I do, and always aim to achieve a high standard.

From working self-employed, I am used to taking personal responsibility for my work, with health and safety regulations and industry standards to work to. I am honest, reliable and punctual, and always offer loyalty and commitment to whatever task or situation I am involved in.

Outside work I am a committed family man and value time with my wife, children and dogs. I like to keep fit with running, cycling, swimming and callisthenics. I enjoy gardening and am a keen amateur musician, playing guitar.
